The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is the world’s leading educational organization and research facility dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.
Since its inception in 2003, TPI has studied thousands of golfers ranging from the top professional tour players to weekend enthusiasts. An incredible amount of data on players of all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels has been gathered during this time. Using this data, TPI discovered how a properly functioning body allows a player to swing a golf club in the most efficient way possible. Additionally, TPI has analyzed how physical limitations in a player’s body can adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury.
TPI’s mission is to educate golfers and industry professionals on the body/swing connection through its one of a kind ‘TPI Certified’ educational program. This program was developed by founders Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips along with a 52 member advisory staff of industry leading experts. Six unique fields of study are offered for TPI Certification: Golf Coaching, Golf Mechanics, Medical, Fitness, Power and Junior Development. Currently, there are over 9,000 TPI Certified professionals in 57 countries assisting players of all skill levels.
D.R. Performance group offers a comprehensive evaluation that involves movement screens and video tape analysis of 12 common characteristic swing defaults. After the screens are completed, a strength training and flexibility program is specifically designed and tailored to your needs and physical limitations.
During the Physical Screen, clients will perform 16 movement screens that test for stability, mobility, motor control, strength, power and cardio endurance. The screens include the Pelvic Tilt, Pelvic Rotation, Torso Rotation, the Overhead Deep Squat, Toe Touch, 90/90, Single Leg Balance, Lat Length, Lower Quarter Rotation, Cervical Rotation, Wrist Hinge, Forearm Rotation, Wrist Flexion, Wrist Extension, Seated Trunk Rotation and the Bridge w/Leg Extension.
During the second phase of the screen, clients will perform additional testing starting with the Four Strength Screens; Single Arm Press Test, Single Arm Pull Test, Split Squat Test and the Squeeze Test. In addition to the strength screens, clients are given Four Power Screens; Seated Chest Pass, Sit-Up and Throw, Vertical Jump and the Baseline Shot.
A detailed golf specific program will then be tailored to stability and mobility issues summarized through the movement screens for each individual client. Progression and Periodization modalities will be implemented into the workout program and assessed over 4 week periods.
With professional golfers, almost 80% of the injuries come from overuse. Injuries in amateur golfers can be caused by overuse but in most cases, they occur due to swing patterns developed around physical limitations. As a result, they over stress areas of the body and create further injury to pre-existing conditions. In professional golfers, we primarily see injuries in the wrists, back, shoulders and hips from overuse. In amateurs, we tend to see injuries in the lower back and elbows due to poor technique and dysfunctional movement patterns.
TPI has created the largest network of golf, medical and fitness professionals in the world and they have the skills necessary to assess a golfers' functional movement and help prevent injury. If you have an existing injury or want to make sure you have the best chance at playing golf injury free, I would highly recommend you see a TPI Certified Professional and have a simple evaluation done. This one step may help you recover from an injury faster or identify issues that may cause injury down the road. Along the way, you'll develop a much better understanding of your golf swing.
